What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the last set of molars to come in, usually between the ages of 17 and 25. Some people have all four wisdom teeth, while others may have fewer—or none at all.

Why Do Wisdom Teeth Need to Be Removed?

Not everyone needs their wisdom teeth taken out. However, removal is often recommended if they cause problems such as:

  • Impaction – when the tooth doesn’t fully emerge and stays trapped in the gums or jawbone.
  • Crowding – when there isn’t enough space in the mouth for your wisdom teeth
  • Infection or decay – wisdom teeth are harder to clean and more prone to cavities or gum disease.
  • Pain or swelling – impacted wisdom teeth can cause discomfort, jaw stiffness, or swelling.

The Wisdom Tooth Removal Process

  1. Evaluation
We take X-rays to see the position of your wisdom teeth and determine if removal is needed.
  2. Procedure
Wisdom teeth are typically removed with a minor oral surgery, performed under local anesthesia or sedation for your comfort.
  3. Recovery
Most patients recover in just a few days. Swelling and mild discomfort are normal, but we’ll give you clear instructions to help you heal quickly.

Aftercare Tips

  • Rest and avoid strenuous activity for the first 24 hours.
  • Use ice packs to reduce swelling.
  • Stick to soft foods while your mouth heals.
  • Keep the extraction sites clean as directed.

Do All Wisdom Teeth Need to Be Removed?

Not always. If your wisdom teeth are healthy, fully erupted, and easy to clean, they may not need to come out. Regular checkups and X-rays help us monitor them over time.
