Tooth Extraction

Tooth Extractions
What Is a Tooth Extraction?
A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the bone. While saving natural teeth is always our first goal, sometimes an extraction is the best option to protect your overall oral health.
Why Might an Extraction Be Needed?
- Severe decay or damage beyond repair
- Advanced gum disease affecting the supporting bone
- A broken tooth that cannot be restored
- Preparation for orthodontic treatment
- Impacted or problematic wisdom teeth
The Extraction Process
-
Evaluation & X-Rays
We examine your tooth and surrounding structures to plan the safest extraction. -
Comfort & Sedation Options
Local anesthesia is used to numb the area. Sedation options are available if you feel nervous or are having multiple teeth removed. -
Tooth Removal & Bone Grafting
The tooth is carefully loosened and removed with minimal trauma to surrounding tissues. In many cases, we recommend placing a bone graft into the socket immediately after removal. This helps preserve the bone, promotes proper healing, and keeps future tooth replacement options (like dental implants) possible. -
Aftercare Instructions
Gauze is placed to help control bleeding, and we’ll provide clear instructions for healing at home.
Recovery & Aftercare Tips
- Bite gently on gauze to reduce bleeding
- Use ice packs to control swelling
- Stick to soft foods for the first 24–48 hours
- Avoid smoking, drinking through a straw, or vigorous rinsing
- Take medications as prescribed
- Keep the area clean by gently rinsing with salt water after the first day
Restoring Your Smile After Extraction
If a permanent tooth is removed, we’ll discuss options for replacement such as implants, bridges, or dentures to restore function and appearance.
